Fooling Ourselves

This human mind
That has created a world
Of gods and monsters
Smothers a growing consciousness
With religion and fear
It drowns us in imaginations
Of eternal immortality
And a taste for the macabre
While haughtily we posture
Though we stand knee deep
In our own waste and refuse
And trembling we fence ourselves in
Against make believe enemies
Of logic and a changing evolution
Holding hands over our eyes
Our ears
Our mouths
As we stand on our platform
Of self-righteousness
And proclaim supremacy
Over this animal kingdom
Where we crush underfoot
The lowly insect
That carries our decomposition
To the fertilization
Of the next generation
That will eat
And die
After fitful dreams
Of celestial wings
And a faster roller-coaster
